Fostering quality and sustainable growth

Lenexa City Center continued to move forward and reach new milestones. The first residents of City Center moved into the The Cottages of Crosspoint Creek and WestEnd Apartments in the northwest quadrant of City Center; and, the first office tenants moved into Building 1 at City Center East. Work started in the northwest quadrant on Central Green, a project to address the city’s Rain to Recreation goals of reducing flooding, protecting water quality and offering new recreational opportunities. The Central Green project includes open green space, a series of step pools with waterfalls, a wetland and a trail connection to Shawnee Mission Park. Lenexa also completed a stormwater improvement project in the Parkhurst neighborhood.

Due to the downturn of the economy, 2009 commercial and residential construction valuation declined for a total of $64.4 million. Despite the challenging economy, however, new office buildings were finished and opened including Kiewit Power and CoreFirst Bank. New developments including Lifetime Fitness, located on Renner Boulevard between 95th Street and 87th Street Parkway and a redevelopment project including CVS and JiffyLube also got underway at 87th Street Parkway and Pflumm Road.

The new two-bay fire station on Prairie Star Parkway near Woodland Road was nearly finished and ready for occupancy, and plans got underway for a new multi-use trail along 95th Street over I-435 to connect the city’s trail system. Residents had requested this connectivity for several years; the trail is scheduled for completion during the first half of 2010.

In May, members of the community came together to dedicate the new Black Hoof Park at Lake Lenexa.
