Every person or company that engages in business or provides a service in the City of Lenexa requires a City of Lenexa Business License. This includes businesses located in other cities working in Lenexa.
Businesses opening a new location in Lenexa will also require a Certificate of Occupancy. New Home Occupations also require additional approvals.

PROCEDURE:
In order to apply for a city Business License you will need to fill out the application and remit the appropriate fee for your type of business. This application can be mailed or faxed to you and is available online. The following information is needed to complete the application:
• common and legal name of business
• street and mailing address
• business, cell and fax phone numbers
• type of business (i.e. contractor, restaurant, physician, etc.)
• number of persons employed in Lenexa, if located in Lenexa
• total square footage of the business, if located in Lenexa
• Kansas State sales tax number
• name of owner or corporate agent with, home address, home phone, date of birth and drivers license number
Licenses are issued for the calendar year. Renewals are mailed in November for the following year and are due on or before January 1. If you are a building, mechanical, electrical or plumbing contractor, you will also need to hold a Johnson County Contractors License (JCCL) in the appropriate trade to be able to take out building permits or to do work as a subcontractor. There are some types of business that are exempt from obtaining a city Business License including any interstate portion of a business, agencies of the United States government, and non-profit charitable organizations. The City Clerk may require anyone claiming to be exempt to file a verified statement of fact.
