A home based business is the operation of a business/service from the home which is incidental to the primary residential use of the premises. A home based business allows for incidental business to take place in the home under criteria established by City Code. Home based businesses must be in keeping with the general residential character of the neighborhood by avoiding excessive traffic generation, parking problems, noise, or other impacts.

PROCEDURE:
Approval of a home based business is made through application for Home Based Business Zoning Permit and a city Business License. Approval can usually be granted at time of application provided complete information is available. A list of the information required is contained within the Home Based Business Zoning Permit application, available by mail or fax from Lenexa Customer Service at (913) 477-7500, and in the Brochure entitled
Starting a Business in Your Home.

FEES:
There is no fee for the Home Based Business Zoning Permit, however, the fee for a city Business License begins at $31.50 and varies based upon the type of business operated.

EXPIRATION DATE:
The city Business License is a one year license and must be renewed at the beginning of each year. The Home Based Business Zoning Permit does not require renewal unless the scope of the business has changed.

PENALTIES:
Violation of established criteria may result in revocation of the Home Based Business Zoning Permit.
