Where can I store my recreational vehicle?
Boats, motor homes, camping trailers and hauling trailers may be stored in the side or rear yard provided that screening is provided to the full height and length of the device by use of fencing and/or vegetation. They cannot be parked or stored in the front yard or beyond the front building setback line. They may only be stored on the street side of a corner lot if adequate screening is provided and they are not parked within 15 feet of any public street.
When fencing a device over six feet high, the fence must be set back from the property line a distance equal to its height. No fencing may exceed 12 feet in height and all fencing requires a building permit prior to construction.
Contact the Codes Enforcement Department at (913) 477-7720 with questions about screening requirements, available options, and to discuss your specific circumstances.
Contact the Building Department at (913) 477-7500 with questions about fence permits and requirements.
Any motor home, boat, hauling trailer or camping trailer stored on residential property must be stored on a dust-free, rut-free surface at all times. Areas covered with grass or ground cover (but not exposed dirt or gravel), water-permeable grass paver, cement, asphalt or other similar type materials are acceptable.
No recreational vehicle longer than 30 feet, wider than eight feet six inches or higher than 12 feet may be parked or stored on residential property at any time.
No more than two recreational vehicles may be stored on any property at any one time.
Parking of any recreational vehicle in the driveway is allowed for trip preparation, not to exceed 24 hours.
The City may issue a temporary parking permit for motor homes or camping trailers in private drives for up to a maximum of 14 days. An application for approval is required.
Where can I park an over-sized vehicle or my commercial truck?
Vehicles with a designated weight specification in excess of one ton shall not be parked in residentially zoned areas. Any vehicle taller than seven feet, wider than eight feet or longer than 18 feet shall not be parked on residential streets or property.
Other vehicles specifically prohibited in residential areas are:
• flat bed trucks
• dump trucks
• utility wreckers
• tandem axle trucks
• cab and chassis trucks (does not include standard pickups or factory built cab and bed trucks which are designed as a singular unit) if they meet size regulations
Exception: Any vehicle that is performing a service to or upon property in the block where the vehicle is parked or standard passenger vehicles, or recreational vehicles.
Where can I park my vehicle to advertise it for sale on a commercial property?
Vehicles parked on any commercial or industrial zoned property for the sole purpose of advertising the vehicle "for sale" must have the written consent of the property owner posted on the vehicle. No vehicle "For Sale" may be parked within 100 feet of any street right of way.
Exception: A business that sells vehicles and that is in conformance with all zoning requirements and development standards and has prior plan approval by the City.
What is an inoperable vehicle?
Any vehicle that does not display a current registration plate or that is missing any parts necessary for lawful operation is considered inoperable and must be stored in an enclosed garage or other building. Some other examples would be a vehicle with a flat tire, missing wheels or mechanical problems that prevent the vehicle from being driven.
How much time is allowed for making home repairs on a vehicle?
If repairs are being made or registration plates are being obtained, 5 days are allowed for repairs, removal or storage of the vehicle. Please be aware that an unattended vehicle on blocks or jacks is a code violation and could present a safety hazard.

• Vehicles may not be parked on a designated bicycle path or sidewalk or parked so as to impede traffic upon a bicycle path or public sidewalk.

We encourage you to contact your homeowners' association to inquire about its parking restrictions, which may be more restrictive than City codes. The City has no authority over such regulations, as long as there is no violation of any of the City's codes or ordinances.
