Whenever citizens are questioned about the look of a community, signs are always one of the top determinants of a City's image. The City of Lenexa regulates signs in order to balance the aesthetic goals of the City with the need for adequate identification and advertising of businesses, developments and institutions. The entire Article E of the Unified Development Code is devoted to the regulation of signs.
The majority of this Article involves the criteria for permanent signs. It is important for business owners in shopping centers, office parks, business parks and other multi-tenant environments to also refer to the Sign Scheme for their development, which is a detailed program for the coordination of signs in a project. A Sign Scheme is a required part of the regulation for these developments that is not spelled out in City Code since it is specific to the individual project. You should be able to get a copy of the approved Sign Scheme from your landlord or property owner's association, or contact Rick Hauber at (913) 477-7713.
Also of special interest are the regulations for the Real Estate and Construction Signs that are allowed on vacant properties and development sites, as well as the Temporary Signs that are permitted for general use, or in conjunction with Special Events.
Sign Permits are required for most signs, however there are some smaller or accessory signs that do not require permits.
For information on permitting, call Rick Hauber at (913) 477-7713.
