Harassing phone calls can become a real problem if they are not handled properly. In some cases, it is just kids playing with the phone, and in others they can turn out to be felony crimes when threats are made. The phone company will assist you with these calls by offering to change your phone number, either temporarily or permanently. Normally, they will not put a tap on the line until a police report has been filed.
PROCEDURE:
Contact the police dispatcher by dialing 913-477-7301 or come to the station to file a police report. We ask that you keep track of these calls, indicating the date, time, and conversation that took place. Listen for background noise if possible. This can sometimes lead us to a location from where the calls might be made. You can also purchase one of the new Caller I.D. systems provided by the phone company that displays the number of the caller before you answer the phone call. If you have an answering machine, use the machine to screen your calls, and make sure that you record any harassing calls. When you file your police report, provide the tape to the officer taking your report. We will use this tape in court if necessary, so we will probably keep your tape as evidence. We will contact the phone company and ask that a call tracer be put on your line. You must keep track of the date/time of the calls, and the telephone company will provide us with the possible numbers if available.
